If you take a look around there are volunteers just about everywhere you go.

Volunteers are in our hospitals, schools, churches. They are our next door neighbors, our best friends.

As we approach the upcoming holiday season people tend to switch their focus on their own needs but the needs of others. A volunteer just isn’t someone who visits patients in a hospital or nursing home. A volunteer is a person who GIVES.

If you give to the food shelf, the local thrift store, are a member of a local service club you are a GIVER – a volunteer.

The Le Sueur Area United Way recently began their 2010 giving campaign. Their goal this year is to raise $45,000. The majority of the funds raised through generous donations from people in the community stay in the community. The United Way helps fund groups like Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Book Buddies, H.A.V.E, the Le Sueur Transit, After Prom Party, Le Sueur Nursery School, Youth Opportunities, Park School Patrol, Senior Diner and so much more.

It is easy to make a donation to the United Way. Businesses in Le Sueur should have received a fund drive kick-off packet with donation forms for employees. Or you can call 665-2501 to find out how you can make a donation.

There are so many opportunities to give – to volunteer – to help make a difference in the community. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities start with your church or join a local service club.

A volunteer can be anyone of any age. This week I hope you read Megan’s year as a missionary begins in this week’s paper.

A couple of weeks ago we brought you the story of Megan Depree who is spending a year abroad volunteering as a missionary.

She is submitting excerpts from her diary to the News-Herald to share her experiences as a volunteer in another country.

Stephanie Hill is at shill@lesueurnews-herald.com or 665-3332.
