LSH girls fall to St. Peter in Subsection 2AA finals

Le Sueur-Henderson senior forward Carissa Pfarr takes it to the hoop against St. Peter guard Katy Kuiper.
MANKATO – The Section 2AA North Subsection title game between No. 1 Le Sueur-Henderson and No. 2 St. Peter was bound to be a good game no matter who came out on top.

It was the Saints that came out on top Monday night 62-42.

The Saints were the first to score and they kept their lead throughout the game. LSH had leads briefly in the first half going up 12-11 after a pair of points by Shelly Blaschko. St. Peter took back the lead going up by as much as five but the Giants fought back and brought the score within two at 22-20 at the halftime buzzer.

The score was close early in the second half and then LSH’s Kaitlyn Braun tied the score 26-26 at the 14:35 mark. Hollie Meyer gave LSH another 1 point lead when she made one of her free throws. That would be the last time LSH would have a lead.

St. Peter’s AnnMarie Brown was nearly unstoppable in the second half. She finished the night with 23 points, including 3-for-4 from behind the arch. The Giants took a lot of good shots in the second half but they just would not fall.

“We struggled offensively,” said head coach Sherri Fritz about how Monday’s game differed from LSH’s win over the Saints just a few weeks ago. “We were also missing a key player (Brittany Brenke).”

The Saints held the Giants’ top scorers to a total tally in the low teens. Shelly Blaschko led with 13 points. Kaitlyn Braun ended the night with 11, and Gretta Schultz had 10.

Defensively the Giants did well keeping the ball away from the Saints and they forced a lot of turnovers.

“We did a pretty good job,” Fritz said. “We worked hard. At the end we were physically and mentally tired.”

LSH 80, LCWM 61

On Friday, March 5 the Giants hosted No. 4 seeded Lake Crystal- Wellcome-Memorial in the semifinal round of the subsection tournament. LSH won 80-61.

Shelly Blaschko led the Giants with 31 points. Gretta Schultz had 15, Carissa Pfarr 12 and Kaitlyn Braun 11.

Schultz had 7 rebounds, Hannah Schultz, 5, and Pfarr 5.

Early in the first half LCWM led by 5 over the Giants but the Giants chiseled away at the lead with a 3-pointer by Blaschko to make the game 15-17 then Blaschko later gets a steal and runs down the court to make a lay-up to tie the game. After that LSH kept the lead and LCWM could not keep up.

The first half of the game was very physical with both teams fighting for possession and forcing jump ball calls.

With under a minute left to go in the first half Pfarr gets fouled on a shooting attempt and goes to the line. She makes one of her two shots to make the score 32-28. With time ticking down Blaschko then steals the ball, tosses it to Braun down the court who hits the break-away lay-up for 2 points. At the half LSH led 34-28.

Coming out of the locker room after the break, LCWM put some pressure on the Giants and shut down scoring for nearly three minutes. LSH broke the ice with 2 and LCWM called a time out.

LSH played a good all-around second half limiting scoring by LCWM and hitting their shots. Blaschko hit a 3 pointer from the top of the arch to make the score 46-35 and Braun followed with a 3 pointer of her own.

Near the end of the half both teams started to slow down and LCWM was in foul trouble. The Knights’ Mckenzie Schaffer fouled out near the end of the game. LSH was good from the line, hitting most of their free throws.

“It was a really tiring game,” said Blaschko. “They pressured us the whole game. We kept our composure and it really showed.”
