School hosts a flurry of activities

What a wonderful week I had covering events at Le Sueur-Henderson schools!

On Feb. 5, while sixth-graders were visiting the state capitol building and eighth-graders were hitting the slopes, the seventh-graders were participating in exploratory day.

Exploratory Day has been around for about 5 years, according to assistant principal Dave Swanberg. This is a fun day for middle school students to take a break from the everyday book learning to experience or “explore” a new craft, hobby or whatever.

After taking photos of the classes the last two sessions of the day I was regretting not being able to take in all of the sessions. I wish I could have taken photo of the cookie decorating session – not so much for the decorating but for sampling the end result!

The LSH middle school staff and community volunteers put on some fun and interesting sessions for the students. Kim Hammes and her son Max showed students how to juggle, ride a unicycle and perform tricks with a Chinese yo-you. Cathy Schluter’s henna tattoo sessions were a big hit as was Rick Dahn’s pheasant cleaning session.

For those of you who may not know, Rick may be becoming a legend to some of these students when it comes to pheasant cleaning. When Rick arrived in the classroom the students started saying almost in unison, “I heard you can clean a pheasant in 10 seconds!” It reminded me of the tailor who killed seven flies in one swat.

Back to the sessions – many girls created cute flip flops and hair styles thanks to Sherri Fritz and Carrie Laabs. Other students are probably showing off fun photos on their Facebook pages that they created with LaRae Ludwig.

Personally, I was fascinated with the session Gert Jensen was teaching on fimo clay. It looks really fun and something I know Erin will love to do at home.

On Saturday I took the kids to the school auditorium to watch the LSH One Act Play group perform. Erin LOVED the play and I think AJ did too.

Although LSH did not win section they did a fantastic job and Marie Kreft, her cast and crew should be proud of their accomplishments this year.
