Wrestlers head into post season

LE SUEUR - It wasn’t quite the way the Giant wrestling team hoped to wrap up their regular season with two losses against Waseca and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown last Thursday. The Giants failed to mount a significant lead against either team throughout the competition with final scores of 49-24 against Waseca and 50-22 against WEM.

“To put it very simple, we weren’t on and didn’t have what we needed against either Waseca or WEM. The boys didn’t come with tenacity or intensity and that is why we didn’t fair well against either team. You’re not going to always be at the top of your game each and every match, but we had hoped to finish stronger going into post season. The last few days at practice we moved on from the losses and are focusing on what we know how to do which is work hard,” head coach Scott Wilson said.

The Giants are expected to be a top four seed in the team tournament for Section 4A. They will also be hosting the tournament on Saturday for the semifinals and finals. A top four seed would mean a first round bye and a quarterfinal match at home on Thursday evening.

“The top four teams are tough and we should be one of them. We have beat Sibley East and they will likely be one of the top teams as well. The first seeded team should be Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial. We lost to them earlier in the season, but didn’t have a full squad so we’re expecting to do better against them if given the chance. Lake Crystal is also last year’s team state entrant so they know how to win the big matches. Our kids are working on keeping pressure on our opponent at all time and moving around the mat,” Wilson said.

After the week’s events, the Giants will head into the individual section the following weekend in St. James.
